Scout

I have been trying, for a long time, to find joy in small ordinary things. The word “trying” is deliberate. Joy of this kind does not arrive unannounced; it has to be arranged for, like a table set for a guest who may not come.

The cost is not money, and it is not even time. It is the permission: to leave the list of other people’s needs unattended for twenty minutes, and to count those minutes as something other than idleness.

This morning I carried my coffee to the garden, where I had put out a dish of seeds earlier, and sat. The tree opposite me was full of sparrows. For a while nothing happened.

Then one came down alone. It did not go straight to the food. It hovered over the dish, wings working, as if testing the air above the seeds, and only then landed in the very middle and began to eat, unhurried. A few moments later, tens of others dropped from the branches and the dish vanished under them.

I cannot say whether the first was the boldest of them, or the youngest, or simply the one whose turn it was. But the order was too exact to be accidental: one, a pause, then all. Whatever was being tested, the seeds or the air or the woman in the chair staring at them, the answer came back as a verdict, and the flock acted on it.

It took me a moment to see that I was part of the experiment. I had assumed I was the observer. The sparrow assumed the opposite. I was a large, unknown object beside the food, and it was my safety being assessed. I found this humbling, and a little flattering: to be judged harmless by a creature that has every reason to doubt it.

After a minute or two, they lifted together and returned to the tree. Then one came down again, then the rest, then the withdrawal. The pattern repeated, and as it did I began to hear it. I had first thought of the wings, but the wings are only the detail. The wave is the whole movement: the arrival, the spreading over the dish, the pulling back, the arrival again. Anyone who has sat on a beach knows the calm that comes from this. It is the calm of a rhythm you are not required to control.

On the wire above, a few pigeons sat and watched. They stayed where they were while the sparrows fed, as if waiting for them to be full. They were larger, heavier, and plainly capable of taking the dish by force, and they did not. Their patience had nothing timid about it; it looked like manners. I had been ready to write the words “cooperation and coexistence,” and the pigeons made me hesitate. There is an order here, and someone is deferring. Perhaps it is courtesy; perhaps it is caution, since a pigeon among forty sparrows is a clumsy thing. I cannot know. But coexistence, I realised, is rarely the absence of hierarchy. More often it is an arrangement that everyone keeps without a word, and the pigeons on the wire were keeping it.

I should be honest about what I was comparing this to. Like most people, I have watched my share of videos of cute animals, and I have enjoyed them. But what I saw this morning was more compelling than any of them, and I wanted to understand why, because the answer seemed to matter beyond the birds.

A reel is a scene somebody else chose. The best seconds have been kept, the dull ones cut, the music added, and the whole thing is built to be finished and abandoned within half a minute. It asks nothing of me, and so it gives little back. What I watched in the garden had no editor. It had empty stretches: the dish sitting untouched, the tree full of birds that did not move, the long moment before the scout decided. Those minutes were not a flaw in the scene. They were what made the descent mean something. The scout’s courage was visible only against the hesitation that came before it.

And the thing that held me most was the pattern, which no clip could have given me. A video can show an event. Only time shows a pattern, and time is what a pattern demands: you must stay long enough to see something happen twice, and then a third time, until you stop watching an incident and start recognising a habit of the world. That is a different kind of seeing. It cannot be delivered to you. You have to sit inside it.

This, I think, is the real difference. The pleasure of a reel is consumed; the pleasure of a garden is witnessed. The first costs nothing and so is spent at once. The second costs attention, and attention is the only currency that buys something you can call your own. The birds were not more beautiful than the animals on my screen. They were mine, in the plain sense that I had waited for them.

I used to think that finding joy in small things was a kind of talent, something that came naturally to some people and not to others. I no longer think so. It is a decision to stay in one place long enough for the place to repeat itself. The coffee was only the excuse. The sparrows came down, withdrew, and came down again, and for those few minutes I had nothing to do but let the tide come in.
